The course aims to present the relationship between language and culture, on the one hand, and to look at cultural diversity in a world of globalization and increased intercultural communication, on the other. Drawing on Sociolinguistics, Intercultural Communication and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), we shall discuss the relationship between dominant and peripheral languages and cultures; the dangers of globalization; linguistic and cultural imperialism; standard and substandard languages and dialects; cultural identity; ideology; as well as changing power structures in society and practices of resistance to power domination Teaching is based on lectures, the autonomous reading of texts and their discussion, and the analysis of literary texts and films. Evaluation is based on a term paper and an oral presentation. The students are required to have a good command of the English language.
