English for Social Interaction

Asst. Prof. Dr. Emilia Slavova
2nd semester, 3 ECTS

The course “English for Social Interaction” develops students’ skills to communicate effectively in different situations and social contexts. Students are exposed to a range of texts such as short stories, poems, speeches, articles and videos. These texts become the starting point for class and small group discussions, written assignments (covering letter, speech, review, etc.), role plays and other communicative activities.

The aim of the course is to engage the students in the performance of various discussions and simulations and to encourage the creative use of language. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to speak with greater confidence on a variety of topics and in a range of different situations, to have extended their linguistic repertoire and to be more aware of language in its social context. Evaluation is based on current assessment: class participation, a portfolio of written assignments, performance in the communication activities and a final term paper on a sociolinguistic issue.
