The course examines a wide range of British Modernist fiction and poetry through a focus on the relationship between the human subject and the technological world of the early 20th century. The problematics of impersonality will be traced in the poetry of Imagism, the early T.S. Eliot, James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Wyndham Lewis’s Tarr and Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. The subjective novel and its affiliations with Expressionism will be discussed in D.H.Lawrence’s Women in Love. Finally the course looks at samples of Bulgarian modernist writing (Chavdar Moutafov, Geo Milev etc.) in order to familiarize students with the Bulgarian perspective.
Classes include a massive component of viewing and analyzing Post-impressionist and Expressionist painting aimed at illustrating the transformation of general stylistic similarities into different artistic media.
