English for Professional Communication

Asst. Prof. Dr. Emilia Slavova
1st semester, 3 ECTS

The course “English for Professional Communication” develops students’ basic research, writing and presentation skills: choosing a topic, researching it, organizing the information in a logical sequence, writing a term paper, preparing an oral presentation, making PowerPoint slides, using visuals and other props to support the presentation, avoiding stage fright and using one’s voice and body language effectively. Students are expected to watch and critically discuss a number of TED videos, to take active part in the class discussions and activities, to reflect on and learn from their presentation experience, as well as to evaluate others’ presentations and give feedback to their peers. They work individually and in groups in order to prepare their oral presentations. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to choose, research and present a topic with confidence. Regular attendance is required. Evaluation is based on class participation, a portfolio of written assignments, a term paper and two oral presentations.
